Squirrels shiver in naked trees
Wrens and sparrows pay a price:
Birdbath water turned to ice
Unprotected flora dies
Under unforgiving skies
Not a sound from anywhere
Carries on the brittle air
Underfoot the frozen earth
Waits for springtime and rebirth
