Common Sense

Perhaps I’m being uncommonly dense 
but I see nothing common about common sense

I read the papers and the magazines 
and wonder what happened to our sensible genes

I won’t give examples of what I’ve seen 
since I’m perfectly sure you know what I mean

Have we lost the ability to think things through 
and decide what we should or shouldn’t do?

A mind left inactive will soon shut down 
and a dunce’s cap is a sad sort of crown

A close look at people reveals a lot: 
getting older’s a given, getting wiser is not
