with my feet in the soft warm sand
I had friends and my family within easy reach
I’m a son of the Purple Land
So I wasn’t prepared for my sad twist of fate
at this inconvenient age
I answered the challenge to set things straight
and now I’m a bird in a cage
oh Lord
now I’m a bird in a cage
I’ve talked to the lawyers, I’ve talked to the court
and I’ve talked to the man upstairs
and I have to admit I’ve occasionally thought
that nobody really cares
I walk in the mornings and read my books
devouring them page by page
that may seem idyllic but it’s not how it looks
for I’m only a bird in a cage
My days can seem endless with nothing to do
and I drift between boredom and rage
but the bleakest of nights always finds me with you
so it’s never too dark in my cage
There will soon come a day when they’ll open my door
and allow me to exit this stage
and I’ll walk on the sand by the sea once more
when I’m finally free of this cage
oh Lord
when I’m finally free of this cage
