In your shoes

I wasn’t born a black man
but I love the blues
and the smooth-flowing poetry
of Langston Hughes

I’ve never been a woman
but can guess how it feels
to cruise through an evening
on stiletto heels

It takes imagination
and a willingness to choose
to walk for just a mile or so
in other people’s shoes
to look at life through their eyes
and find that what I see
is proof beyond a doubt
that they are really just like me
