Road Trip to Mexico

When the plan was mentioned
so many said that
we (the few)
were mad
to drive those dangerous
Mexican roads – much maligned by hearsay –
and yet we drove for miles
and miles
through forests of Joshua trees,
over mighty mountains of Monterrey
and beyond
with never a mishap,
not one.
Until one sad morning
a careless car rammed a bewildered lamb
on the highway near San Luis
and They said, See?
I told you so!
