The Newly Enlightened

There are those who emerge
from a fog or a dream
or a place where they’re blinded or frightened
then decide they’ve been blessed
so they strut and they preen
and believe their awareness has heightened

They then take to the streets
and go knocking on doors
with their grip on self-righteousness tightened
and they proselytize
never resting their jaws
with the zeal of the newly enlightened

They’ll forgive me, I hope
when I do not embrace
their particular brand of salvation
but I’ve spent my life traveling
in time and in space
while they’ve barely pulled out of the station
